COACHING
Coaching benefits clients by helping them improve according to their priorities. Coaches can help clients set goals, create action plans that help them move forward, and become more self-aware so they experience less confusion and encounter fewer obstacles in the future. For clients who feel they have "stalled" in the past, the coaching relationship can help them approach their lives in ways that feel more empowered.
Coaching and counseling are different processes and relationships, although there is some overlap between them. Both are considered "helping professions," and both are highly collaborative in the setting of goals and co-creating a process of change. Like counselors, coaches will ask questions and provide insight; however, coaches do not diagnose clients or collaborate with other mental health or medical professionals. Coaches also tend to offer more self-disclosure, and although coaches are sensitive to the potential privacy concerns of their clients, confidentiality is not legally protected between coach and client. Finally, coaching generally is not covered by insurance, and is for a defined duration with no expectation that the relationship will continue at the end of the agreed-upon period.
